SUMMER MANDALAS

Part of a mindfulness practice that began in Wiltshire, UK during the 2020 lockdown, these little mandalas helped imbue in me a sense of calm and joy.
I continued making them during my stay in Wicklow, Ireland, then later in the year in Edinburgh, Scotland.

These circular discs were made during my artist residency at Marlborough College, and when things shutdown in March of 2020, and it looked probable that a large scale installation and an exhibition would be postponed (later cancelled) I thought to make them into jewelry pieces.
They are made of paperclay, which is a blend of recycled clay and soaked, recycled paper, rolled onto molds I made from a neighbour’s rhubarb leaves. They were bisque fired, then glazed in a range of oxides, some with a second layer of transparent glaze on top, then fired again.
Each piece comes on a hand-painted card.
