SPIRIT COMES ALIVE 2024

SPIRIT COMES ALIVE series of drawings on vellum were completed during the Hugo Burge Foundation one month artist residency at Marchmont Estate in Scotland. The first few of these were sketches to work with new ideas and to loosen up my drawing, then I continued doing several each day for a total of twenty-four. I was also working on a few earth work sculptures, a large installation of photocopied photographs and drawings and developing a fibre-arts embroidered sculpture. The look to combine organic forms with geometric shapes as well as introduce hints of figural elements.

When the outside world seems unkind and chaotic, I look to create order. I find fascination in geometry, and comfort in the trees, the starry skies, roots, birds and textures. Drawing offers a contemplative, healing meditation of sorts

This series of watercolour paintings explore beyond the surface, the seen, the known of the natural world.
They are roots, branches, wings, mycelium, seaweeds; they are energy and vibration.
They are my versions of how living elements communicate with each other: measurable, recorded energetic language.

For this series of over thirty drawings, I used pressed botanical pieces salvaged from experiments with boiled prints to draw from, arranging them from top to end, creating an enclosed space. These contemplative drawings reminded me of staring into space at night when you see a layer of stars, then another and another. The endless perceivable space contained by the objects within our periphery is the gap of unknown, the divine matrix or the dream state where the musical overlaps with the tangible and in some small way, these pieces represent those possibilities.
